Mitchinson.netHow Our Company Came to Be
I spent 18 years as a long-haul trucker, pulling freight from all points in the continental United States-I met a wonderful "Georgia Peach" in Atlanta, brought her to Virginia and married her. It wasn't too long after that my career as a road driver was ended. For the last 10 years or so, I've kept a laptop computer with me and as a hobby, started tinkering with building websites to keep myself occupied when weather, mechanical breakdowns or shippers and receivers kept me laid over for hours on end. Some of those guys must have thought my trailer became an extention of their warehouse!
In retrospect, this time spend waiting for this load or waiting for a repair wasn't wasted-I used it to master HTML code as well as some other applications such as Shockwave and graphics manipulation (to make banners, ads and other graphics) with some simple programs that weren't as expensive as the "industry standards."
But after a few years and a few projects to my credit, people started asking me, "Why don't you start charging for what you do?"
A Losing Election, An Open Door
I happened to come across some election material for a fellow I really didn't support for the office he sought, so I did a few searches to find out who was running against him-because whoever was opposing him was my guy. I found out the name of the candidate and looked up his website-when I saw it, I was pretty stunned. Somebody had been using Frontpage-badly. So I called this guy running for office and explained to him that with this website, he would most surely lose-it didn't have what anyone could call a "professional" look even by the standards of 10 years ago. So I asked him to let me send him a mock-up of what I could do. If he liked my work, I'd build him an all new website if he didn't, I'd still vote for him despite his website.Word-of-Mouth Pays Dividends
The following February, I was contacted by someone I had met on this first foray into political websites and she asked me if I'd be interested in doing the websites of a couple of clients she had for the next election. With the wife just having lost her job and money getting tighter, the compensation I was offered was just too good to pass up. Word-of-Mouth advertising landed me another high-profile client and with that, I-264 Web Design was born. We're a young company, Incorporated in March, 2010 and unlike others, we don't envision ourselves as taking over the Internet or charging an arm and a leg for the work we do-We're just using our talents and pursuing our dreams and we're willing to work for it.
My wife Christie and I started this company with two goals in mind-Our first goad was to help our customers get the kind of professional-level website they wanted for their small business. By doing that, our second goal of earning a steady income would take care of itself.-Jimmy Frost
